Dog Friendly Things to Do

Because your best friend deserves a Smoky Mountain vacation, too

Bringing your pup to the Smokies? Good call. With scenic trails, pet-welcoming spots, and plenty of fresh mountain air, this area is just as tail-wagging fun for dogs as it is for you. Here’s how to spend the day exploring together:

Visit Three Bears General Store

Swing by and stroll the aisles of the largest gift shop in the Smokies—they’ve got everything from souvenirs to homemade fudge (for you, not your pup). Leashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome inside.

Mine for Treasures at Pigeon Forge Gem Mine

Your pup can tag along while you search for real gems and fossils. Sit outside at the flumes together and let your dog enjoy some people-watching while you sift for sparkly finds.

Walk the Riverwalk Greenway & The Island

Both spots are leashed-dog friendly and full of sights, sounds, and new smells. Walk the peaceful riverside paths or enjoy the buzz of The Island’s fountains, shops, and music. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or photo op with your furry companion.

Hike Dog-Friendly Trails in the Smokies

While most national park trails restrict pets, there are two standout options where dogs are welcome on a leash:

The Gatlinburg Trail – Flat, scenic, and runs along the river.

Oconaluftee River Trail – A little further out, but worth it for a peaceful forest walk.

Both offer beautiful views without the crowds—and plenty of sniff stops.

A Few Tips Before You Go

Always keep your dog leashed and clean up after them.

Bring plenty of water—summer gets warm fast.

Be mindful of crowds and hot pavement in peak season.

The Smokies Are Better with a Best Friend

There’s nothing like sharing the mountains with your pup by your side. Whether you’re shopping, mining, or hiking, these dog-friendly stops make sure your Smoky Mountain trip is one you both will love.
